How to inflate farm tractor tyres?
When inflating your tyres, safety should always be a top priority. One of the most effective ways to ensure safety during tyre inflation is by using a tyre inflation safety cage. These cages are designed to protect against the potential hazards of tyre explosion, which can cause serious injury and damage. A safety cage provides a barrier that can contain large fragments and air blasts in the event of a tyre rupture.
Using a safety cage is particularly important when inflating large tyres, such as those used on agricultural machinery. These tyres are often subjected to high pressures and significant loads, increasing the risk of a tyre failure during inflation. By using a safety cage, you can significantly reduce the risk of injury and damage, making tyre inflation a safer process.
Safety Precautions for Field Tyre Inflation
When inflating tyres in the field, safety precautions are crucial to prevent accidents and ensure smooth operations. Here are some detailed guidelines to follow:
Always position yourself at an adequate safety distance from the tyre during inflation. This distance should be outside the potential trajectory of any tyre fragments in case of a rupture. Never stand directly in front of the tyre, as this is the most dangerous position.
Pay close attention to any unusual noises coming from the tyre during inflation. Strange sounds can indicate potential issues such as a developing leak or structural failure. If you hear anything suspicious, stop the inflation process immediately and inspect the tyre.
Utilise a long airline hose to allow you to control the inflation from a safe distance. Quick-release couplings at both ends of the hose can help you deflate the tyre quickly if a problem arises.
Inflation guns with an air extension tube of five or more meters offer several advantages, especially in scenarios where you need to inflate tyres in hard-to-reach areas or maintain a safe distance during the inflation process. These tools are designed to enhance safety and efficiency, making them ideal for various applications, including automotive, industrial and agricultural settings.
Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, gloves, and sturdy footwear. This gear can protect you from flying debris in case of a tyre failure.
Now, before installing the safety cage, we already checked that the tyre is correctly mounted and the beads are in right positions.
So, now we’ll just remove the valve core. Yes, and tighten the valve nut by hand. Now, we’re having here a 460/85R38 tyre which has a recommended operation pressure of 1.6 bar. Tyre manufacturers provide charts for tyre and machine specific inflation pressures. So, you might want to check yours there. Now, we’ll inflate to the target pressure 1.6 bar.
Make sure that your tyres are cold before inflating them. If you’ve just come back from the field, wait for several hours for the tyres to cool down and then proceed with inflating them.
Once you’re done, screw on the valve cap.
