If you frequently use multiple sets of tyres for tractor, it is essential to store the set that is not in use properly. Proper storage extends the lifespan of your tyres and saves you money in the long run by preventing premature wear and damage. When storing tyres on your premises, there are several key factors to keep in mind to ensure they remain in optimal condition.

Whether you plan to store the tyres for a short period or an extended duration, the first step is always to clean them thoroughly. Removing dirt, debris, and any residues from the tyres helps prevent deterioration and maintains their integrity.

clean

It is crucial to ensure that the storage area for your tractor tyres is kept absolutely clean and free from dirt, oils, and other contaminants. Tyres are prone to accumulating dirt, dust, and road grime over time, which can lead to deterioration and damage if not addressed. When tyres are stored in an unclean environment, these particles can embed themselves into the rubber, causing cracks, weakening the structure, and reducing their overall lifespan. Additionally, exposure to oils or chemical residues can degrade the rubber compound, making the tyres less effective and potentially unsafe for future use.

To prevent such issues, it is important to thoroughly clean the tractor tyres before storage and ensure the storage area itself is free from any substances that could harm them. A clean, dry, and well-maintained storage space preserves the quality of the tyres and ensures they remain in optimal condition for when they are needed again.

Use soap and water and clean the wheels if the tractor tyres are still mounted. Wipe them down and let them dry completely before storage.

In storage, one of the key factors is to protect the tractor tyres from direct sunlight by covering them with tarpaulins.

Does the temperature matter?

An ideal temperature for storage is between 5 and 15 Celsius degrees between 40 and 60 Fahrenheit.

A workshop or a climate-controlled garage works fine but the main thing is to keep the tractor tyres away from heat or any heated surfaces. These will cause permanent damage to your tyres.

What about outdoors?

Outdoors is not good for storing tractor tyres. Avoid any place that could get hot or wet or too cold.

Okay, into the garage then. This is fine. We will just have to remove those. These liquids should not be stored in the same space or allowed to get in contact with the tyres that would cause permanent tyre damage.

Why is that?

For example, engine oils, when allowed to saturate a tyre, result in swelling and softening of the rubber. Later, when this tyre is used and wears rapidly.

To prevent further harm, act quickly. Wipe the tyre clean as soon as possible and wash it thoroughly using warm water mixed with a synthetic detergent. This simple yet effective step can help limit damage and preserve the tyre's quality.

But remember that water is also harmful. It could cause damage by seeping through into the fabric. Make it a point to check that the inside of the envelope is not full of water or wet.

Also, ozone is harmful to the tractor tyres as it may cause cracking. So, it is best to keep the tyres away from machinery that can generate ozone.

Now, let’s move those tractor tyres upright. Standing upright means less stress on the tyres.

However, if stacking the tractor tyres is unavoidable, it is important to exercise caution to prevent accidents and damage. Avoid building stacks that are too high, as this increases the risk of the tower toppling over.

A toppled stack can damage the tyres and pose a safety hazard. To maintain stability, limit the height of the stack and ensure that each tyre is aligned properly. By keeping the stacks low and secure, you can protect your tyres from unnecessary harm and ensure a safer storage environment.

What if the tyres on rims?

If you store them mounted on rims, you can store them stacked. But remember to reduce inflation pressure first and position them lug against lug. Some people even regularly turn the stock over to avoid uneven stress on the tractor tyres.

Important Checklist

  • Store clean and dry tyres.
  • Store the tyres in a cool and dry place indoors.
  • Protect the tyres from sunlight, heat, liquids and frost.
  • Don’t store the tyres in the same room with ozone-generating machines.
  • Upright position is the best.
  • If the tyres are mounted on rims, store them stacked. Reduce inflation pressure first.
